Tell me about what Hattie Larlham does?
Hattie Larlham is a nonprofit organization that provides medical, residential, recreational and work training services to 1,800 children and adults with developmental disabilities. The organization provides services to children and young adults at the Hattie Larlham Center for Children with Disabilities in Mantua, Ohio, and to adults at community-based homes throughout Ohio. I work in the Development Department, and I coordinate the major fundraising events for the organization.
What has been the best benefit of being an ILEA member?
Meeting other event professionals and making connections and friendships. It’s truly not what you know, but WHO you know! It’s been terrific getting to know so many great people from every corner of the events world. It’s also been great for me as a Cleveland transplant – I wasn’t familiar with event venues and vendors in the area when I started my job at Hattie Larlham, but attending ILEA events and meeting other members has really given me knowledge of everything events-related in the CLE. Now I know who to call when I need to buy centerpieces, hire an A/V company, or rent a popcorn machine!
How does serving on a committee further your personal growth and business growth?
It gives me frequent and regular contact with ILEA board members, and allows me to get to know other members in a less-formal setting. It also allows me to get my hands dirty and learn more about how ILEA functions, internally and externally. Fulfilling the duties of the membership committee (such as working event registration) give s me the opportunity to meet every single person who attends an event – members, nonmembers, and everyone in between – expanding the reach of my professional network.
Who is your dream client?
Me! I don’t sell anything or provide services in my position, so I am the one working with vendors for the events I plan. I try to be patient, understanding, open to new ideas, and completely up front with vendors about my non-profit event budget. J
What types of events do you cover?
I work in Hattie Larlham’s Development Department, and my job as Events Manager is to create and implement major fundraising events for the Hattie Larlham Foundation. The funds raised through our events supports the programs and services provided to the people we serve, including medical care, recreational activities, Creative Arts programs, work training programs, and more. Each year, we hold a golf outing, a volunteer and donor recognition luncheon, and a large formal gala. I also work with other Hattie Larlham agencies to coordinate smaller donor cultivation and stewardship events, such as grand openings, groundbreakings, luncheons, and small meetings.
Why did you join ILEA?
I’ve been an events planner for more than 10 years, but never had an opportunity to network with other events professionals (I’m originally from the Albany, NY area, and ILEA does not have a chapter in that area). I met an ILEA member (Chris Hatala) at the Cleveland Event Expo in 2015, saved the information he gave me, and signed up! Chris was passionate about ILEA, and his enthusiasm inspired me to join.
